TOEFL Scores Paper-based scores for Listening Comprehension (Section 1) and Structure and Written Expression (Section 2) range from 31 to 68, while the scores for Reading Comprehension (Section 3) range from 31 to 67. The TOTAL paper-based test score is reported on a scale that ranges from 310 to 677. An acceptable TOEFL score depends entirely on the requirements of each institution. There is no specific passing or failing score.
TWE Scores The TWE score is reported on a scale of 1 to 6. The score is printed in a separate box on the TOEFL score report. It is not added to the TOEFL score. The essay will be independently rated by two qualified readers using the Writing Scoring Guide. Neither reader will know the rating assigned by the other. Your essay will receive the average of the two ratings unless there is a discrepancy of more than one point; in that case, a third reader will independently rate your essay. Your essay will thus receive a final rating of 6.0, 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, 2.5, 2.0, 1.5, or 1. A score of 0 will be given to papers that are blank, simply copy the topic, are written in a language other than English, consist only of random keystroke characters, or are written on a topic different from the one assigned. If you have questions about how your scores have been used or interpreted, contact the institutions or agencies directly. |
